The Apennine spur stretching between
Positano and Salerno gives rise to a very jagged coastline which does
not allow for the construction of large towns .Only at the end of
certain ravines do the cliffs taper off and form beaches by diacritic
accumulation caused by streams flowing into the sea. Despite
theruggedness of this landscape, traces of prehistoric
settlements do exist..... |

Capri |
|
 |
Of all the islands of the Parthenopean Gulf,
Capri is the only one not of volcanic origin in this almost exclusively
volcanic area. Capri has been settled since the Late Stone Age, as
archeological excavations at the beginning of this century have
confirmed. At the time the Phlegrean volcanoes were at their most active,
Capri and
the Sorrento Peninsula formed a solid block..... |

One quick glance at the lay-out of the city
and a fundamental fact immediately catches one's eye: Pompeii, unlike
Herculaneum and ancient Naples, is not the fruit of an organic design of
city planners. In the regular town design two atypical nuclei stand out:
one, roughly quadrilateral, around the "civil forum" and the other
around the tiny "triangular forum"
next to the theatres district..... |

Paestum |
|
 |
Paestum has always been shrouded in
mystery. It was probably founded around 650 BC by a large group of
Dorians who had been expelled from the city of Sybaris, a luxurious
resort across the mainland on the Ionian Sea. The Dorians named their
new colony Poseidonia, after the most important of their gods; it
flourished and quickly became the greatest city on the gulf of
Salerno. Then in 510 BC, Sybaris was destroyed.... |

Naples |

The largest city of Campania, capital of the
province and the region, Naples is the third most populated city in
Italy (after Rome and Milan), with over a million inhabitants, and is
the most important industrial center and trading port for the South. It
is situated halfway down the Tyrrenia coast, at the innermost point of
the Bay of Naples, between Vesuvius and the Phlegrean
Fields......

Mediterranean land that has been depicted described
and immortalised in song by artists, poets and travellers from every
period of history. Along the coast, rugged and inaccessible cliffs soar
upwards between beautiful beaches, hidden caves, enchanting bays and
sheltered coves. Whereas inland, the high plains, rolling hills and
lofty mountains are seared by deep
valleys to create a truly unique landscape.....
